Being a School Governor is a complex, challenging, demanding yet rewarding vocation. For this reason, we place great emphasis on keeping the School and candidates informed throughout the recruitment process, to ensure momentum, continuity and complete transparency. OFSTED deems the following to be potential shortfalls within some governing bodies:

Governors being unambitious about expectations

Lack of holding the school and the HT to account

Over reliance on information from the Headteacher

Lack of systematic visits to the school

Lack of engagement with the school’s development and planning

Limited role in monitoring, and none of it 'independent'

Limited understanding of data and school quality

How can AGS help?


AGS is designed to recommend and make a real difference and improvements to Governance. AGS is developed to help all UK schools on the path to achieve ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ OFSTED inspections by supporting the governing body in a self-review that will encourage development. AGS aims to help the governing body to be:

  • Confident that it has a clear delineation of roles and responsibilities, the right structures to secure operational efficiency and effectiveness, and an appropriate number of skilled and committed governors to meet the context and needs of the school or academy.
  • Clear in its vision for the school or academy and aware of how, together with the school leadership team, this can be achieved.
  • More focused, more skilled and thus more effective.
  • More aware of its freedom to work in different ways and how to take advantage of this.

With a strong emphasis on support and guidance, not inspection, your AGS Consultant works closely with you to determine the key priorities for your school, agree an appropriate plan of action whilst supporting the chair of governors through a self-review. The aims of the self-review process are to identify:

  • Confident that it has a clear delineation of roles and responsibilities, the right structures to secure operational efficiency and effectiveness, and an appropriate number of skilled and committed governors to meet the context and needs of the school or academy.
  • Which areas need improving
  • Which specific actions the governing body can take to achieve the desired improvements

Our Support Offering may look like:

  • Governing Body Review, including skills analysis of individuals and a full Governing Body Action Plan. Concluding in an evaluation of needs and advice. Telephone advice can also be included.
  • Assistance with the execution of the Governor improvement action plan
  • Which specific actions the governing body can take to achieve the desired improvements
  • Governor Mentoring for individual Governors or Chair of Governors
  • Assistance with the execution of the Governor improvement action plan
  • Financial review – what the Chair of Finance and Chair of Governors should know
